Well, we’ve had the opportunity to get to know two 20 Mile owners—Monica and Angie. But we can’t stop there! If you haven’t had the chance to get to know Brooke Young, you are in for a treat! She is one of the most funny and kind people you will ever meet. Here’s her story.
Brooke grew up in Wyoming and was always very active as a kid. Her family did a lot of skiing, hiking and climbing. After graduating from high school, she decided to stay close to home for college and went to University of Wyoming—Go Pokes! During her college days Brooke didn’t mess around with normal college kid jobs, i.e. serving or house sitting, she opted for two slightly more extreme employment opportunities, one as a ropes instructor and the other as a ski instructor. I suppose you could say her active upbringing had paid off.
After receiving her diploma and officially becoming a University of Wyoming alum, it was time to launch a new career, but jobs in Wyoming were few and far between, so she had two choices, move to Denver or Salt Lake. She decided on Denver because a certain boy happened to be there. That certain boy’s name is TJ (our fourth 20 Mile owner). So basically Brooke moved to Denver and the rest is history. HA! Brooke and TJ are now the proud parents of two adorable kiddos Jack and Gracie. After having Jack in 2014, Brooke was looking for a way to start getting in shape. TJ had already started CrossFit and she decided to give it a try.
“My body was SO sore when I first started, but I just kept going everyday, and eventually it got better!”
Brooke loved being part of a CrossFit methodology that helped people achieve overall health and wellness. She had become part of the 20 Mile community as a member and really enjoyed being there. So when Monica and Angie approached Brooke (and TJ) with the opportunity to become part of the 20 Mile ownership team in 2019, they jumped at the opportunity. Brooke had always wanted to own a gym and she knew 20 Mile would be a good fit because she already loved the community. Plus, she couldn’t think of two better individuals to learn the gym business from!
Today Brooke, is not only an CrossFitter, a gym owner, and a mom attempting to raise two good humans, she also works for a company, Affordable Care, that provides management services for dental practices. She oversees the operations of 50 practices on the west coast with the help of Operations Consultants that she manages. Somehow she does all this maintaining a good sense of humor and always keeping a smile on her face.
Gym ownership is difficult. Period. Brooke knew that when she signed on as an owner at 20 Mile in 2019. What she didn’t know was that a few short months later, the entire gym world would be completely rocked when COVID hit in 2020.
“During the pandemic, trying to navigate what to do without a roadmap and make decisions that impact the future without knowing what the future would hold was so incredibly difficult. We just wanted to do everything we could to help our members though all the craziness, but there were never clear answers on how to best do that. Even though it was hard, it was worth it. Seeing a member smile when they achieve a goal or have a breakthrough is a very special thing to be part of. And it’s for that reason that we continue to trudge though the sludge every single day.”
When I asked Brooke if there was a thought or a piece of encouragement she’d like to pass onto 20 Mile members, this is what she said:
“Practice kindness with each other, with your community and with yourself. And show up! It’s 99% of the battle.”
We are 3/4 of the way there, but our little excursion to meet the four members of the 20 Mile Fitness Collective ownership team isn't quite complete! Stay tuned for fourth and final owner spotlight coming at you soon!
